spending cuts

Today is Buy Nothing Day in the UK, a 24-hour holiday from rampant consumerism:

(maybe a slight irony in the website having a co.uk domain name?)

I feel it has less impact this year with the current recession than in previous times. From my trip to Oxford Street a week or so ago, there are noticeably less people shopping and spending. For once, it was actually possible to move around within shops, try on items and not be stampeded upon by a hoard of hungry consumerists. There is also the added bonus at the moment for those of us who still have money to spend that most stores are discounting heavily.

Nevertheless, with consumer spending driving the British economy, Buy Nothing Day is still relevant, and as the website points out, the effects of the recession on shopping will continue only for its duration, prompting an "orgy of overcompensation" once Western selfish capitalist life is back to normal.
